I’ve been trying to find a way to get back here for months. Almost a year even. Fits and starts, fits and starts. Write a little, disappear for a little long while. Write a little, disappear for an eternity a while.

Well, it’s a new year and a clean slate and I’m just not going to look back and reflect a whole lot on 2012 except to say this: I survived.

And today as I look forward – because that’s what I do, I look ahead! I certainly don’t wallow or get stuck in the past, and I absolutely don’t cling to painful memories and use them as a shield to keep people away from me and to justify my constant self medication with extra helpings.

Wait a minute, what? Let’s try that again:

And today as I look ahead at a new year, I’m almost – excited. Almost. And really, I’d prefer if we could just keep that between us. Because I’m not sure if I’m ready to let the whole world know I might be feeling a twinge of optimism about my future, mmkay? But I just might be ready to stage a comeback. But don’t call it a comeback. I’ve been here for years.

Anyway. I’m not going to bore you with a list of goals or resolutions or whatever because if you’ve been reading this rag for a while, you know that I set new goals all the time. And I fail as much as I succeed. And that I think failure is actually a good thing because it means you’re taking a swing at something. And even through the past shitty crappy year, I’ve taken a swing at a few things. I’m a goal setter, even at my worst. But I will share with you a few thoughts that I’m having today as I get ready to fill up a new calendar with new experiences…

1. I’m still considering a post about my favorite moments from 2012. Whether I do or whether I don’t, my high point was captured at Fitbloggin. This is what Zumba feels like to me.

2. I am proof that you can’t out train bad nutrition. So much of how your body shapes up is based on how you fuel it. I don’t really know anyone who works out more than me, and even though I am powerful and strong and have some definition and lots of endurance and stamina, I’m still many pounds overweight. Like, many. So I’m throwing a bunch of stuff at the wall right now and we’re gonna see if anything sticks. Connect with me on the boards of Roni’s DietBet, over at Pinterest, on Instagram taking part in the #FMSphotoaday for January, or here. Because being connected is a huge part of what motivates me.

Something New. #FMSPhotoaday #DayTwo
2013-01-02 07.44.20Yep. I’m studying for an AFAA certification in Group Fitness and this is my new goal, these are my new materials, and it’s a new direction for my fitness business. I often have students ask me if I could help them one-on-one, and while I have taught several personal Zumba Toning classes, this group fitness certification is a stepping stone to … my personal training certification. (Did I just type that out loud?) I mean, I’ve got to get my shit act together first. But I’m working on it.

3. Some of you might know that I have a hotass business partner who writes over at Simply Sam. Yeah, I love that woman. She is truly on top of her game right now and is constantly kicking my butt to straighten out my sloppiness and keep putting one foot in front of the other. (Oh, and Sam? Here is my public declaration that Dropox is my new love and you’re the reason why. Thank you for kicking my tush until I finally got with
the showgram). Anyway, our business is called trio fitness and even though many of you don’t live close enough to come to our classes all the time (but if you’re going to Fitbloggin ’13 you may be in luck!) all of you can like our Facebook page and join in the fun. We want that page to grow into something much more interactive than just us posting schedules. So this month we’re encouraging all of our health seeking friends to join in the fun! January is about patting yourself on the hotass (or back if you prefer) and showing off when you’re doing something good for yourself. Post pictures of your awesome food choices, sweaty after-workout pictures, new hairstyles, whatever is making you FEEL GOOD ABOUT BEING IN YOUR SKINSUIT!! And tag trio fitness so we can give you a virtual FISTBUMP.

4. Finally, a year ago I wrote a post about the change in my mindset about the January crowds at the gym. Whether or not you agree with the idea of making New Year’s resolutions, it’s a fact that you fitness regulars are going to have to share the space for a while with the fitness re-commits or newbies. And again I am going to implore urge you to NOT be annoyed by the influx and instead to give encouragement. Let’s try to keep our classes and our cardio decks full as long as we can! Give an extra smile or hello to a newbie who is probably scared out of their brain and intimidated as all getout but also INCREDIBLY DESIROUS of a life change. There’s room for everybody.

I’ve said on Facebook already (and if we aren’t friends there, please shoot me a request!) that I have 63 opportunities to teach some type of group fitness class in January. Some of my classes are 30 minute lunch-crunch, some are for children, some are for seniors/truebeginners/people who need modifications, some are for people who have been working out forever. There is a place for everyone in one of my classes. Or in one of Samantha’s classes. Or in one of any good group fitness instructor’s classes! If there is something you want to try but you’re feeling nervous, let us know! We’ll give you a nudge. Or a little handholding. Or even a kick square in your hotass if need be. It’s a brand new year! Why NOT try something new! I mean, right?

Okay. Here goes. Let’s DO this.

(Holy crapballs!)

I know they say you can never go home again, but for some reason I feel amongst our little blogging community like it’s a bit more like ‘the good old days’ this new year. Maybe I just want it to be, lol. Now where’s Ryan… ;)

Very much loving the thing that we can’t talk about but that rhymes with schmoptischism.

Here’s to a wonderful new year!

You were a highlight of FitBloggin for me. Live this post especially about January being busy. I cheer the January joiners as they are making an effort. Who cares when you start as long as you just start.

I know that I’m supposed to snark it up over here to maintain my reputation as a snarker-er, but somehow I can’t bring myself to do it. Here’s wishing your lots of hope, health and happiness in the coming year, Sue. You deserve it!

Why do I always cry when I read this kind of stuff? :) It’s a good cry I guess to see the “human” part of folks, to know you’re not alone. This is the kind of stuff that keeps me motivated, so I say a BIG THANK YOU for taking the time to share. Let’s do this thang! xoxo

Awww, happy lucky ’13, lady. I am also proof you cannot out train poor nutrition (only when I was topping out at 12 hours per week of swim/bike/run/weights did I start dropping, and that’s not a sustainable amount for me (just during peak training times). Good luck with your 63! That’s awesome!
