happy enough

by MrsFatass on December 30, 2009

Well, I had a lovely vlog planned for today, my homage to all of the goal setting and resolution making that is circulating the interwebs this week. But due to the massive, vomitous ICK that took over our lives Monday night, my schedule has been thrown off. The vlog will come on New Year’s Eve.

But imagine my delight this morning when I found I had been tagged by this Hot Ass with a fun little meme, 10 Things that Make Me Happy.

Simple. Direct. And fun, because when I sat down to think about it? I had wayyyy more than 10 that I could have written about. So, Insatiable Host, here goes.

TEN THINGS THAT MAKE ME HAPPY

10. Gadgets. It’s true. I think my Blackberry is sexy, every time I discover a new feature on my IPOD I get tingly, and I think I just might die without a Kindle. I just might.

9. Pajamas. A point made obvious by the Christmas Cocoon I tweeted about, I can find that days have flown by where I have worn nothing but flannel pants, wifebeaters, and my favorite bathrobes. Nothing I love more than a good thorough shower, slathering on my favorite lotion, and slipping into a freshly laundered pair of pajamas.

8. Long walks. I need at least a few minutes alone every day just to keep my head screwed on straight. The way I get that? Taking a walk. Ya’ll know how I feel about my beach walks – settles my soul – but on a daily basis, I love it when it’s a little dark, like first thing in the morning or just after Trophy Husband gets home from work, a little chilly, and at least 45 minutes long. I suppose I consider it part of my workout regimen, but really it’s my mental health regimen.

7. Netflix. I don’t get out much.

6. My friend’s kids. I am not really a kid person. Even my own kids, sometimes. I mean, my love for them knows no boundaries, but I’m not great at playing. And when it comes to other people’s children? Well, much like that line from Madagascar, when Melmen says “they are so cute from a reasonable distance,” I find it generally works best to love other kids from afar. But something’s happened over the last few years, partly because my son is old enough to be making his own friends now, partly because I’ve got more experience being a mom so I’m more comfortable around kids in general, but I love watching my friends kids grow up. Looking at them in the Christmas cards over the last month, getting the excited emails and video clips from proud mamas, and especially the open door policy we have with our neighbor/friend/family a couple of doors down, my affection for other children in my life has grown enormously. It makes me happy.

5. My friends. Yeah. We know this. I love my girls. And it took a while to get the hang of friendship from afar. And now I have friends here, too, which has made this place a bit less foreign. And I have my blog friends. And even on days when I might be feeling lonely? I never feel alone. Not anymore.

4. My blog. I’m a writer. There, I said it. And this interactive journal is way more interesting than the one I had in fifth grade with a lock. You guys keep me honest and evolving and laughing. I do this because of you.

3. Twitter. I didn’t get it at first. Now I do. And aside from loving all of the conversation, I also love the challenge of conveying a complete thought in 140 characters or less. Twitter rocks.

2. Music. I sort of forgot about how much I love music after spending a few years deeply entrenched in the Sesame Street and Kidz Bop genres. But I used to be the kind of girl who hung out with bands, who went to see shows, who had an awesome collection of bootlegs, and I am still that girl who has a story for every song that might come up on your IPOD. And thanks to the beauty that is ITunes, I am slowly but surely reconstructing the soundtrack to my life, 99 cents at a time.

1. Me. Perhaps my biggest discovery of Oh-Nine is that I am actually in charge of my own happiness. I own that. It’s not some elusive emotion that I just wait for in between bouts of sadness or heartbreak (well, that is if being impervious to heartbreak wasn’t my superpower). Happiness is an action. And even in the face of adversity, or especially in the face of adversity, I choose how to react. I choose.

And I am getting back to that place where my choice is happy. Maybe not ecstatic or thrilled or satisfied or content. Maybe just happy enough. But happy nonetheless.

#8 would make me happy IF I could do it more often. I'm a human children's jungle gym and home, the equivalent of chains which prevent me from taking a long, peaceful walk without much pre-planning.

Aargh!
